Arriving without the right documents is the most common reason a rental desk refuses to hand over a car, and in that case the money you paid is usually not refunded. The good news: the list is short.
Credit card in the main driver's name
The main driver must present a credit card in their own name. The supplier blocks a security deposit on it, normally equal to the excess. Make sure the card has enough available limit.
- Visa, Mastercard and American Express credit cards are widely accepted.
- Debit, prepaid and virtual cards are often refused for the deposit, even if you paid for the booking with one.
- The card you show at the desk does not have to be the card you booked with.
Driving licence
Bring your full, valid driving licence, held for at least one year (some suppliers ask for two years for premium cars). Photos or copies are not accepted.
International Driving Permit
Many countries require an International Driving Permit (IDP) for licences issued outside the EU, and for any licence not written in the Latin alphabet. The permit is only valid together with your original licence. See our International Driving Permit guide.
Passport or national ID
A valid photo ID with the same name as the licence, card and booking.
Booking voucher
Have your voucher ready, printed or on your phone. It confirms what you've already paid for and protects you from being charged local desk rates.
