Spain's motorway network is excellent and much of it is free, which makes long drives between Madrid, Seville and Granada easy. Málaga is the classic starting point for Andalusia's white villages and the Costa del Sol.
Read the fuel policy carefully when comparing offers in Spain. Full-to-full is the fairest option, while pre-paid fuel can make a low headline price less attractive once you reach the desk.

Driving in Spain
| Driving side | On the right |
|---|---|
| Tolls | Many motorways are free. Some autopistas are tolled, paid at booths by cash or card. |
| Licence | Drivers with a non-EU licence should carry an International Driving Permit with their national licence. |
| Good to know | Madrid, Barcelona and other cities have low-emission zones. Rental cars usually meet the rules, but city-centre parking is scarce and expensive. |
