Germany is easy to drive: well-signed roads, no motorway tolls for cars and plenty of 24-hour rental desks at airports and major stations. Munich is a natural base for Bavaria and the Alps, Frankfurt for the Rhine and Mosel valleys, and the Black Forest is a short drive from Basel or Stuttgart.
One-way rentals within Germany are common and often reasonably priced, which makes a north-to-south route practical.

Driving in Germany
| Driving side | On the right |
|---|---|
| Tolls | No motorway tolls for cars. Some sections of the Autobahn have no general speed limit, but many do. |
| Licence | Most foreign licences are accepted for short visits. An International Driving Permit is a sensible extra if your licence is not in Latin script. |
| Good to know | Many city centres are low-emission zones (Umweltzone) requiring a green sticker. Cars rented in Germany normally have one. |
