Car hire fuel policies compared

Full-to-full, pre-purchase and same-to-same, and which one saves money.

The fuel policy is set by each supplier and shown in the rental terms. It can change the real cost of a rental more than you'd expect.

Full to full

You collect the car with a full tank and return it full. You pay only for the fuel you use, at pump prices. This is usually the best value. Keep the receipt from a petrol station near the drop-off in case of a dispute.

Pre-purchase (full to empty)

You pay the supplier for a full tank at pick-up and can return the car as empty as you like. The price per litre is often higher than at local stations, there may be a service fee, and unused fuel is usually not refunded. It can make sense for long one-way trips.

Same to same

You return the car with the same amount of fuel as when you collected it. Check that the level is recorded correctly on the rental agreement before you drive away.

Electric and hybrid cars have their own rules on charge level at return. Ask at the desk if it isn't clear in the terms.
