A car is the best way to see the fjords. Bergen and Stavanger are the classic bases for the western fjords, and Tromsø is the starting point for northern-lights drives in winter. Distances look short on the map but roads are winding, so plan fewer kilometres per day than you would elsewhere.
Many Norwegian rental cars are electric. Ask about charging and how the car should be returned before you set off.

Driving in Norway
| Driving side | On the right |
|---|---|
| Tolls | Most roads use automatic tolls (AutoPASS). The rental company is billed and passes the charges on to you, sometimes with a service fee. |
| Licence | Drivers with a non-EU/EEA licence should carry an International Driving Permit with their national licence. |
| Good to know | Dipped headlights must be on at all times. Car ferries are part of many fjord routes and are paid separately. |
